TPHA-qualitative hemagglutination reaction with Treponema pallidum antigen

What is it? 

TPHA (Treponema Pallidum Hemagglutination Assay) – is a qualitative blood test used to detect syphilis. It tests for antibodies against the causative agent of syphilis (Treponema pallidum). 

When is it recommended? 

• When there is suspicion of syphilis (skin rashes, genital sores); 
• Prophylactically before planned surgeries, during pregnancy; 
• After risky sexual contact; 
• To evaluate the presence of infection after treatment. 

Benefits: 

Helps to determine if a person is infected with syphilis, even when there are no clear symptoms. It is one of the main diagnostic tests for syphilis. 

Important to know: 

TPHA remains positive for life even after syphilis is cured, so additional tests (e.g., RPR) may be necessary for accurate disease stage assessment. Test results are always interpreted by a doctor.
