Vitamin C

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) test – is a blood test designed to evaluate the amount of this water-soluble antioxidant in the body. Vitamin C is essential for many vital processes: collagen synthesis, immune function, wound healing, iron absorption, hormone (dopamine, norepinephrine, adrenaline) synthesis, and also acts as a strong antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative stress.

Vitamin C participates in hydroxylation reactions, is essential for carnitine synthesis, which is necessary for energy production in cells.

The main natural sources of vitamin C – citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, grapefruits), black currants, strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, kiwis, papayas.

Lack of ascorbic acid leads to scurvy – a rare but dangerous avitaminosis manifested by:
– bleeding gums and tooth loss,
– increased bleeding and vascular fragility,
– poor wound healing,
– weakened immune system,
– mild anemia.

Vitamin C overdose is a rare occurrence, usually presenting with nausea, diarrhea, rarely – kidney stones formation, especially when consuming large doses (>10 g per day).

Test principle: The amount of vitamin C is determined from venous blood (plasma) or urine by spectrophotometric or chromatographic method. Results are presented in µmol/l or mg/l units.

Recommendations:

• It is recommended to perform when vitamin C deficiency is suspected – with frequent bleeding, poor wound healing, weakness or recurring infections.
• Useful for evaluating nutritional status, especially in older people, children, those with intestinal diseases or alcoholism.
• Assigned to patients after surgical operations, in case of prolonged physical or emotional stress.
• Performed if excessive or unjustified use of vitamin C supplements is suspected.
• It is recommended to come to the test fasting, having not taken vitamin C supplements for at least 24 hours prior.
