Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) test is a blood test designed to evaluate the amount of this water-soluble antioxidant in the body. Vitamin C is essential for many vital processes: collagen synthesis, immune function, wound healing, iron absorption, synthesis of hormones (dopamine, norepinephrine, adrenaline), and also acts as a strong antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin C is involved in hydroxylation reactions, is essential for carnitine synthesis, which is necessary for energy production in cells.
The main natural sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, grapefruits), blackcurrants, strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kiwis, papayas.
A deficiency of ascorbic acid develops into scurvy — a rare but dangerous avitaminosis characterized by:
– bleeding gums and tooth loss,
– increased bleeding and vascular fragility,
– poor wound healing,
– weakened immune system,
– mild anemia.
Vitamin C overdose is rare, most often presenting with nausea, diarrhea, rarely with kidney stone formation, especially when consuming large doses (>10 g per day).
Test principle: Vitamin C levels are determined from venous blood (plasma) or urine by spectrophotometric or chromatographic method. Results are presented in µmol/l or mg/l units.
Recommendations:
- Recommended when vitamin C deficiency is suspected — frequent bleeding, poor wound healing, weakness, or recurrent infections.
- Useful in assessing nutritional status, especially for the elderly, children, those with gastrointestinal diseases or alcoholism.
- Prescribed to patients post-surgery, or experiencing prolonged physical or emotional stress.
- Performed if excessive or unjustified intake of vitamin C supplements is suspected.
- It is recommended to come for the test fasting, and to avoid taking vitamin C supplements for at least 24 hours prior.
