Prothrombin time (PT) test according to Quick is a globally recognized screening test for coagulation, designed to assess the extrinsic and common coagulation pathways (consisting of factors VII, X, V, II, and fibrinogen). The PT test is used for monitoring patients taking oral anticoagulants, determining coagulopathies before surgical interventions, or diagnosing congenital and acquired factor deficiencies.

This test is also a diagnostic tool in diagnosing disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome (DIC), evaluating liver function, or vitamin K deficiency, which may occur due to severe malnutrition or vitamin K metabolism disorders, as factors II, VII, and X are vitamin K-dependent. Test principle The test contains thromboplastin and calcium, which activate the external coagulation cascade when added to citrated human plasma. The time interval from the addition of the reagent to the formation of the fibrin clot is measured and indicated in seconds.

Recommendations:

• It is recommended to perform prophylactically once a year, before surgeries, and periodically according to the doctor's instructions for disease diagnosis and treatment control.
• The test results are influenced by age, medication, diet, smoking, and pregnancy.
• For the test, it is necessary to arrive fasting for 12-14 hours and to avoid aspirin and other anticoagulants for 2-3 days.
