Tests
Tests for apolipoproteins and lipoprotein(a) are used to assess cardiovascular risk, while tests for immunoglobulins IgA, IgG, IgM, and IgD provide information about the amount of antibodies in the immune system.
Lipoprotein and Apolipoprotein Tests
Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) reflects the number of atherogenic lipoprotein particles, and ApoA1 is the main protein of HDL particles. The amount of lipoprotein(a) is largely determined by genetics and can help clarify cardiovascular risk, especially when there is a family history of early heart disease or a standard lipid profile does not explain the risk.
What do Immunoglobulin Tests Show?
IgA, IgG, IgM, and other classes of immunoglobulins are antibodies. Their concentrations can be tested to evaluate recurrent infections, immunodeficiencies, some inflammatory or other conditions. An increased or decreased amount of one class is not a diagnosis of a specific disease.
These two groups of tests are not interchangeable, so choose the test according to the specific purpose – assessing cardiovascular risk or the immune system.
