Kidney Function Indicators Tests

Blood take service 5.00€

Several blood and urine indicators are used to evaluate kidney function. Tests for creatinine, cystatin C, urea, albumin, total protein, uric acid, and others can be performed.

Creatinine and Cystatin C

Creatinine concentration in the blood is often used to calculate the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) - an indicator that helps assess how well the kidneys filter blood. Creatinine levels can be affected not just by kidney function but also by muscle mass, diet, and other circumstances. Cystatin C is another marker used to assess filtration; in certain situations, combining it with creatinine can improve the accuracy of eGFR.

Urea levels can also change with kidney function impairment, but protein intake, fluid balance, and other factors influence its concentration. Therefore, a single urea or creatinine result is not a complete assessment of kidney health.

For early evaluation of certain kidney damages, urine tests are also important, especially albumin excretion. If there is diabetes, high blood pressure, or already diagnosed kidney disease, planning the combination of tests and their frequency with a doctor is advisable.
