Uric Acid (UA) – is the final product of purine metabolism, most of which is formed in the liver and excreted through the kidneys. Uric acid dissolves poorly in blood plasma, so an excess can lead to the formation of sodium urate crystals. These crystals accumulate in joints and urinary tracts and can cause gout and urinary tract stones.
Increased concentration of uric acid in the blood is often associated with decreased excretion through the kidneys or increased purine metabolism. A decreased concentration of uric acid (hypouricemia) may occur with increased excretion through the kidneys. This can be related to malignant diseases, AIDS, Fanconi syndrome, diabetes, or severe burns.
Test Principle: The concentration of uric acid is determined by a biochemical method from venous blood. Results are presented in µmol/l units. If necessary, uric acid can also be tested in urine.
Recommendations:
- Recommended to be performed prophylactically once a year.
- Useful for diagnosing gout or urinary tract stones.
- Prescribed for patients with chronic kidney diseases, metabolic syndrome, or high blood pressure.
- Performed to monitor purine metabolism and the effectiveness of gout medications.
- Test results may be influenced by medications, dietary supplements, or a diet rich in purines.
- It is recommended to come to the test after fasting for at least 12 hours.
