Description

Uric Acid (UA)it is the final product of purine metabolism, most of which is formed in the liver and excreted from the body through the kidneys. Uric acid is poorly soluble in blood plasma, so when in excess, sodium urate crystals can form. These crystals accumulate in the joints and urinary tract and can cause gout and urinary tract stones.

Increased uric acid concentration in the blood is usually associated with decreased excretion through the kidneys or increased purine metabolism. Reduced uric acid concentration (hypouricemia) may occur with increased excretion of uric acid through the kidneys. This can be associated with malignant diseases, AIDS, Fanconi syndrome, diabetes, or severe burns.

Test principle: The concentration of uric acid is determined by a biochemical method from venous blood. Results are presented in μmol/l units. If necessary, uric acid can also be tested in urine.

Recommendations:

  • It is recommended to perform prophylactically once a year.
  • Useful in diagnosing gout or urinary tract stones.
  • Prescribed for patients with chronic kidney diseases, metabolic syndrome, or high blood pressure.
  • Performed to monitor purine metabolism and the effectiveness of treatment with gout medications.
  • Medications, dietary supplements, or a diet rich in purines can affect test results.
  • It is recommended to come for the test fasting for at least 12 hours.
