Tests
Inflammatory marker tests indicate whether an inflammatory process might be occurring in the body, but they usually do not specify its location or cause. Tests for C-reactive protein (CRP), high-sensitivity CRP, and MxA/CRP can be performed.
CRP and high-sensitivity CRP are not the same target
The standard CRP test is used to assess inflammation or infection and can be repeated to monitor changes in condition. CRP levels can rise due to various reasons such as bacterial or viral infections, trauma, autoimmune inflammation, and other processes, so an increased count alone does not determine a specific diagnosis.
High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) measures much lower concentrations of CRP and is most often used in a different context—as an additional indicator of cardiovascular risk. It should not be directly interpreted the same way as CRP when tested for acute infection.
The MxA/CRP combined test evaluates two different biological responses and can provide additional information when assessing acute respiratory infections and determining whether the signs are more indicative of a bacterial or non-bacterial process. However, a laboratory indicator does not replace symptoms, examination, and physician assessment, especially if the condition worsens or symptoms intensify.
