Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Tests
Tests
What are STI tests?
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are transmitted through sexual contact. These diseases are caused by various microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. STIs can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Some infections can also spread through direct contact with infected skin or mucous membranes.
What are the most commonly detected STIs?
- Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) - often asymptomatic but can cause pain during urination, genital discharge. If untreated, it can lead to infertility and chronic pelvic pain.
- Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) - often asymptomatic but can cause pain during urination, purulent discharge. If untreated, it can lead to infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Syphilis (Treponema pallidum) - in the primary stage, a painless sore; in later stages, skin rashes, fever, enlarged lymph nodes. If untreated, it can cause serious damage to the heart, nervous system, and other organs.
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV) - usually asymptomatic, but can cause genital warts. Some HPV types cause cervical, anal, oropharyngeal cancers.
- Herpes (Herpes simplex virus - HSV) - painful blisters or sores in the genital, anal, or oral area. Causes recurrent infections, more severe infections in immunocompromised individuals.
- Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis) - vaginal discharge, itching, pain during urination. If untreated, it can increase the risk of other STIs.
Why is it important to get tested for STIs?
STIs detected early can be effectively treated, helping to prevent serious health issues in the future. Additionally, knowing your health status can protect your partners from potential infections.
When is it recommended to get tested for sexually transmitted infections?
- If you experience symptoms such as abnormal discharge amount, color, smell, pain during urination, itching, rash in the genital area, pain during intercourse;
- During regular sexual health check-ups at least once a year, and every 3-6 months if you have multiple sexual partners;
- After engaging in unsafe sexual activity;
- After having sexual contact with an infected person;
- Before planning a pregnancy or during pregnancy;
After treatment (a control test is recommended at least 6 weeks after treatment).
