Tests
Tuberculosis tests help determine if a person's immune system has encountered the bacteria causing tuberculosis and may be required for work, studies, or other official purposes. At REZUS, a QuantiFERON-TB blood test can be conducted.
What does the QuantiFERON-TB test show?
QuantiFERON-TB is an IGRA-type blood test that assesses the immune system's response to tuberculosis bacteria antigens. The BCG vaccine does not affect this test result as it might affect a tuberculin skin test, making IGRA particularly useful for people vaccinated with BCG.
A positive blood test result indicates the likelihood of tuberculosis infection, but it does not, by itself, specify whether the infection is latent or if the person has active tuberculosis. In such cases, medical evaluation is necessary, and depending on the situation, a chest X-ray, sputum, or other tests may be required. A negative result does not always conclusively rule out the disease, especially if symptoms are present or if infection could have occurred recently.
If the test is required for work, studies, travel, or another official purpose, it's worth checking beforehand what specific test and document the institution requests before ordering.
