Cancer Marker Tests

Tests

Cancer markers are substances found in the blood or other samples, whose concentrations can change when suffering from certain oncological diseases. Among the tests performed are AFP, CEA, CA 15-3, CA 19-9, CA 125, PSA, HE4, and others.

What can cancer marker tests show?

The purpose of these tests depends on the specific marker and the reason it is conducted. Some markers are used to monitor the course of an already diagnosed disease or the response to treatment, while others can be one of the additional tests in assessing a suspected disease. The result must always be associated with symptoms, imaging tests, and other diagnostic data.

Most cancer markers are not suitable as an independent screening for the whole body in a person without symptoms or established risk. An increased marker concentration does not necessarily mean cancer - it can also be caused by benign conditions. Similarly, a normal result does not exclude all oncological diseases.

If you are undergoing the test due to a condition monitored by a doctor, it is important to choose the specific marker indicated and evaluate the result according to previous tests. For preventive screening, one should rely on screening methods recommended based on age and individual risk, rather than randomly chosen cancer markers.
