Fecal Tests

Different indicators can be tested in a fecal sample – from occult blood or intestinal inflammation markers to infection pathogens. It is possible to perform an immunochemical occult blood test, Helicobacter pylori antigen test, calprotectin, lactoferrin, and certain intestinal infection tests.

What is important to know when choosing a test?

The occult blood test searches for invisible blood in the stool and can be used in the context of colon disease investigation or screening. Calprotectin and lactoferrin are markers of intestinal inflammation – their increase indicates an inflammatory process but does not determine a specific disease. The H. pylori antigen in stool is intended for a completely different purpose – to detect this bacterial infection.

In infection tests, it is important to choose the method based on symptoms, their duration, travel or antibiotic use history. Not every episode of diarrhea requires a broad pathogen test.

Collect the sample according to the specific test instructions in the designated container and store it as directed. The result of some tests may be affected by medications or improper sample storage, so it is worth checking the preparation requirements before collecting the sample.
