Urine Tests
Tests
Urine tests can provide information about the condition of the urinary tract, kidneys, and certain metabolic processes. General urine tests, urine sediment microscopy, determination of albumin, creatinine, electrolytes, and other substances, as well as tests from 24-hour urine, can be performed.
From General Testing to Specific Indicators
The general urine test evaluates several urine properties and can indicate the presence of protein, glucose, blood cells, or other changes in the sample. When a more specific question needs answering, targeted tests are chosen. For example, the amount of albumin in urine can be important in assessing kidney damage, while 24-hour urine tests are used when it is important to determine the amount of a substance excreted throughout the day.
The reliability of the result depends on a properly collected sample. A midstream urine sample collected in a designated container is usually required for a general test, but the requirements for individual tests may vary. If a 24-hour urine test is ordered, it is crucial to follow the specific collection instructions for that test.
A single changed urine indicator does not yet mean a specific diagnosis. Results are evaluated in conjunction with symptoms, blood tests, and, if necessary, additional tests.
