Description

Creatinine determination in 24-hour urine is an important laboratory test that allows the assessment of kidney function. This test uses urine, not blood or other body substances. Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle activity that is removed from the body through the kidneys. Its level can provide important information about kidney health and functioning. This test is particularly important for monitoring the progression of kidney diseases or assessing the effectiveness of treatment.

Purpose of the Test

Creatinine determination in 24-hour urine helps evaluate the kidneys' ability to filter blood and eliminate waste. The test can help diagnose various health disorders, such as chronic kidney failure, acute kidney injury, or other kidney function disorders. It is also used to monitor patients with diabetes or hypertension, who are at increased risk for kidney diseases. The creatinine test in 24-hour urine is recommended when there is a need to accurately assess kidney function or identify possible pathologies.

Symptoms and Indications

The doctor may recommend a creatinine test in 24-hour urine in the presence of certain symptoms or situations. These may include frequent fatigue, swelling, especially in the hands and feet, changes in urine volume or its color changes. This test may also be prescribed for preventive purposes, especially if the patient has chronic diseases such as hypertension or diabetes. During pregnancy, a creatinine test may be recommended to ensure that the kidneys are functioning properly.

Test Procedure

The creatinine test in 24-hour urine requires collecting urine over 24 hours. This means that all urine excreted during the day and night must be collected in a special container. It is important to properly prepare for the test, for example, avoiding intense physical activity the day before, as this may affect creatinine levels. Test results are usually ready within a few days.

Instructions for Proper Collection of 24-hour Urine:

  1. It is best to perform the 24-hour urine collection procedure when you are at home all day.
  2. Keep the urine collection container in a dark and cool place (protected from direct sunlight) for the next 24 hours.
  3. Upon waking up in the morning, discard the first urine portion into the toilet. Collect the next urine portion into the container; this will be the starting point for 24-hour urine collection.
  4. After 24 hours from the start time, finish the urine collection process into the urine collection container(s).
  5. Mix the total collected 24-hour urine volume and pour 50 ml into a separate sterile container, labeling it with the patient's name, surname, date, urine collection start and end time (hour and minute), total volume of collected urine (ml), and deliver it to the laboratory.

Interpretation of Results

Elevated creatinine levels in 24-hour urine may indicate that the kidneys are not filtering blood adequately, which may be a sign of kidney disease. Decreased creatinine levels may indicate a reduction in muscle mass or the impact of certain diseases. Results may be temporary and depend on various factors, such as diet, physical activity, or even medications. If test results are unusual, it is necessary to consult a doctor for additional tests and an accurate diagnosis.

Health Significance

The creatinine test in 24-hour urine is an important diagnostic tool that helps ensure early detection and monitoring of kidney diseases. Timely testing can help prevent complications, halt disease progression, and allow the doctor to prescribe appropriate treatment. Regular monitoring of creatinine levels is essential for patients with chronic diseases, as it allows timely detection of changes and taking necessary measures to preserve health.
