Allergy and Food Intolerance Tests
Recurring symptoms after food consumption, contact with animals, pollen, or other environmental factors can have different causes. Allergy and food intolerance are not the same, so the choice of test should start with the suspected reaction.
If allergy is suspected
In allergy diagnostics, general or specific IgE against specific allergens, their groups, or components can be tested. Detection of specific IgE indicates sensitization, but a positive result should be evaluated along with symptoms and whether the person actually reacts to a specific allergen.
If symptoms are associated with food
Digestive symptoms may not only be caused by allergies. For example, lactose intolerance is related to lactose breakdown and is tested differently than IgE-mediated milk allergy. Commercial food IgG tests should not be interpreted as a standalone diagnosis of food allergy or intolerance, so one should not unnecessarily eliminate a large number of food products based solely on such test results.
If reactions are pronounced, recurring, or an allergy is suspected, it is beneficial to align the testing plan with a doctor – this helps to choose a test that answers a specific question.
