CYFRA 21-1 is a tumor marker used to monitor the progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This marker is a fragment of cytokeratin 19 that is released into the blood as malignant cells disintegrate. The concentration of CYFRA 21-1 in the blood often reflects the tumor mass and the degree of disease spread.
The test is not intended for the primary diagnosis of lung cancer but is especially useful in monitoring disease progression and response to treatment. In cases of effective treatment, the concentration of CYFRA 21-1 decreases. Monitoring the amount of the marker helps to assess therapy effectiveness and possible relapse. Sometimes this marker may also be elevated in other epithelial carcinomas or benign diseases, so it is always evaluated together with other data.
Test Principle: The concentration of CYFRA 21-1 is determined by an immunochemical method from venous blood. The results are presented in ng/ml units. The test is performed serially to monitor dynamics.
Recommendations:
- Recommended for patients with non-small cell lung cancer to monitor the course of the disease.
- Useful in assessing treatment efficacy and possible relapses.
- Indicated in suspected disease progression or after surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment.
- Performed alongside other markers such as NSE or CEA for a more precise evaluation of tumor biology.
- It is recommended to come for the test fasting for at least 12 hours.
