IgA | Immunoglobulin A

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) - these are antibodies whose main functions are binding microorganisms in mucous membranes, activating the alternative complement pathway, and triggering inflammatory reactions. It is particularly important in protecting the respiratory, urogenital, and digestive tracts from infection. IgA cannot cross the placenta, so it is not present in the fetal blood. IgA concentration decreases in cases of mucous membrane infections, atopy, and autoimmune diseases. IgA concentration increases in chronic liver disease, chronic infectious diseases, especially of the digestive and respiratory tracts, or rheumatoid arthritis.
