Description

Mycoplasma Pneumoniae IgG antibodies – this is a laboratory blood test designed to evaluate whether a person was previously infected with the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections. This bacterium spreads through airborne droplets, infects the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, and can be the cause of pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, or even atypical pneumonia.

One of the most common symptoms is a dry, persistent cough that can last for several weeks. Not everyone who carries Mycoplasma or Chlamydia in their nasopharynx gets sick – it depends on the person's immunity. However, even those without symptoms can infect others.

IgG antibodies in the blood usually appear 3–4 weeks after infection. They persist for a long time and indicate a past or asymptomatic infection. In the case of reinfection, the titer of IgG antibodies may increase, while IgM often does not manifest.

Test principle: Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgG antibodies are determined by an immunochemical method from venous blood. The results help confirm a past infection or reinfection.

Recommendations:

  • Recommended for suspected chronic or past Mycoplasma infection.
  • Useful in evaluating immunity, especially if there are long-term respiratory symptoms.
  • Prescribed together with the IgM test to determine the stage of infection.
  • Conducted for recurrent or unclear origin respiratory tract infections.
  • No specific preparation is needed for the test.
