Description

Quantitative Determination of Calprotectin in Stool – is a non-invasive biochemical test used to assess intestinal mucosal inflammation. Calprotectin is a protein found in neutrophil granules, and its level in stool increases when there is an inflammatory process in the intestinal wall. This test is particularly useful in distinguishing inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) from functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The test is widely applied in cases of chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood in stool, or other unclear intestinal symptoms. Determining calprotectin levels helps decide whether further invasive tests, such as a colonoscopy, are needed.

Test Principle: The test is performed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or immunochromatographic method, allowing quantitative determination of calprotectin concentration in stool. The obtained result is evaluated according to established limits – the higher the calprotectin level, the more intense the intestinal inflammation.

Recommendations:

  • Recommended for chronic or recurring diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood or mucus in stool, also monitoring the course and treatment effectiveness of inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • The test helps avoid unnecessary invasive procedures for patients whose symptoms more likely indicate functional rather than organic disorders.
  • The sample should be collected in a clean plastic container, without urine or water contaminants, preferably delivered to the laboratory the same day or stored in a refrigerator (according to laboratory instructions).
  • Interpretation of results requires evaluating the overall clinical picture – calprotectin levels can also increase due to infections or when taking certain medications (e.g., NSAIDs).
  • Repeating the test can be useful for monitoring the progress of treatment or changes in symptoms.
