What is ALEX Air and what makes it unique? 

ALEX Air – is a modern molecular blood test designed to identify immediate type (IgE-mediated) allergies to inhalable allergens, developed by the Austrian company "MacroArray Diagnostics," a world leader in innovative allergy diagnostic tests. ALEX Air is currently the only allergy test in Lithuania with an official European Union in vitro diagnostic regulation (IVDR) certificate.  

The test analyzes sensitization to 58 inhalable allergens, of which 55 are individual molecular allergens – precise and specific compounds that can trigger an allergic reaction, and determines the total IgE level in the blood. 

Most traditional allergy tests (allergen panels) examine sensitization to allergen mixtures/extracts, which do not always contain the most important molecular allergens. This means that a patient may experience allergy symptoms, but the test will not detect them – simply because the specific allergen causing the reaction is not present in the test. 
ALEX Air solves this problem – it examines the true "culprits" of allergies, i.e., specific allergenic proteins, not mixtures of allergens. 

Molecular allergy diagnostics – why is it so important? 

Molecular allergy diagnostics not only allows for identifying whether a person is sensitized to a particular source of allergens (e.g., birch, cat, house dust mite) but also helps to understand: 

  • Which exact allergen triggers the immune reaction. 
  • Whether the allergy is related to cross-reactions, where the body confuses allergens of similar structure (e.g., pollen and food products). 
  • What is the risk of allergy severity, and what symptoms may occur in the future. 

Accurate, quantitative results – not just "yes" or "no" 

Another important advantage of ALEX Air over other allergen panels is that sensitization to allergens is determined quantitatively, i.e., the specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) level in the blood is measured accurately. All other allergen panel tests can only semi-quantitatively measure the sIgE level in the blood, which significantly reduces their accuracy. Quantitative measurement provides the opportunity to determine even very small sensitizations to allergens and to monitor changes over time – whether sensitization is decreasing or increasing. 

Unique CCD blocking – fewer false results 

Some people's immune systems react to carbohydrate structures (CCDs) found in many plant-based allergen extracts and produce sIgE against these CCDs. However, these sIgE present in the blood have no clinical significance. Conventional allergen panels often interpret such cases as "positive," even though there is no real allergy. 

The ALEX Air test automatically blocks these CCD structures, preventing false positive results. This means that the doctor receives only clinically significant data – without disturbing "noise." 

ALEX Air helps to properly select allergen immunotherapy (ASIT) 

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) is a long-term treatment that can significantly reduce or even completely eliminate allergy symptoms. However, for it to be effective, it is essential to know precisely whether a person is sensitized to the allergens used in the ASIT preparation. Most ASIT preparations are made from allergen extracts, but they may lack certain specific proteins that cause an allergic reaction. If a patient is sensitized to such a protein, and it is not present in the preparation, the treatment may be ineffective. ALEX Air allows this to be determined in advance and helps to individually select the most appropriate treatment plan.
