Testosterone (TESTO) is the main male sex hormone synthesised in the testes. It is responsible for the formation of secondary sexual characteristics - facial and body hair, change in voice timbre, growth of muscle mass. Testosterone is also involved in the prostate and seminal vesicles and ensures sexual function.
In women, testosterone is also produced - in smaller quantities - in the ovaries and adrenal glands. The determination of testosterone levels in women is important in the diagnosis of androgenic syndrome (AGS), polycystic ovary syndrome (Stein-Leventhal syndrome), suspected adrenal hyperplasia, tumours of the ovaries or adrenal glands, and in the assessment of ovarian insufficiency.
In men, the test is performed in the case of suspected reduced testosterone production, such as hypogonadism, infertility, decreased libido or muscle mass. It is also important for monitoring estrogen therapy, chromosomal aberrations (e.g. Klinefelter's syndrome), or cirrhosis of the liver.
Principle of the test: Testosterone levels are determined by immunochemical analysis of venous blood. The results are given in units of nmol/l or ng/dl. Free testosterone and SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) are often additionally measured to better assess hormone balance.
Recommendations:
- It is recommended as a prophylactic treatment for men with potency or fertility problems.
- Useful for women with suspected hormonal imbalances or elevated androgen levels.
- For the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome, AGS or suspected adrenal/ovarian tumours.
- It is performed to assess the causes of hypogonadism in men and to monitor the course of hormone therapy.
- It is recommended to arrive in the morning and fast for at least 12 hours.
