TESTO | Testosterone

Testosterone (TESTO) is the main male sex hormone synthesized in the testes. It is responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as facial and body hair, voice changes, and muscle mass growth. Testosterone also plays a role in prostate and seminal vesicle function and ensures sexual function.

In women, testosterone is also produced—in smaller amounts—in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Its concentration determination is important in diagnosing androgenic syndrome (AGS), polycystic ovary syndrome (Stein-Leventhal), suspected adrenal hyperplasia, ovarian or adrenal tumors, and assessing ovarian insufficiency.

For men, the test is performed when decreased testosterone production is suspected—in cases of hypogonadism, infertility, reduced libido, or muscle mass. The test is also important in monitoring estrogen treatment, in cases of chromosomal aberrations (e.g., Klinefelter syndrome), or liver cirrhosis.

Test principle: Testosterone concentration is determined by an immunochemical method from venous blood. Results are presented in nmol/l or ng/dl units. Often, free testosterone and SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) are additionally evaluated to more accurately assess hormone balance.

• Recommended for prophylactic testing in men with potency or fertility issues.
• Useful for women when hormone imbalance or increased androgen concentration is suspected.
• Prescribed for diagnosing polycystic ovary syndrome, AGS, or suspected adrenal/ovarian tumors.
• Performed to assess the causes of hypogonadism in men and monitor hormone therapy progress.
• It is recommended to undergo the test in the morning and on an empty stomach for at least 12 hours.
