Lipase has slightly better specificity and sensitivity than total α-amylase, but the diagnostic value of lipase is lower than that of pancreatic α-amylase. This is one of the most informative indicators of pancreatitis.

Morphine increases the concentration of lipase in the blood.

During acute pancreatitis, the increase of lipase in the blood lasts longer than α-amylase. The concentration of lipase in the blood may increase in chronic diseases of the bile ducts and pancreatic tumors. The concentration of lipase in the blood does not increase in epidemic parotitis and appendicitis.
