ST2 – is the latest biological marker used to evaluate the risk of heart failure and other cardiological and vascular diseases. Its significance is increasingly recognized in clinical practice as it is an independent prognostic indicator associated with myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis processes. ST2 allows for more accurate identification of patients at risk for acute or chronic heart failure, even when clinical symptoms are not yet expressed.
ST2 concentration in the blood reflects heart wall tension, inflammatory processes, and macrophage activation. The advantage is that the values of this marker are not dependent on comorbidities such as renal failure, anemia, or arterial hypertension, nor are they influenced by the patient's age, gender, or body weight. This makes ST2 an extremely reliable and versatile marker in various patient groups.
ST2 testing allows for earlier identification of patients at risk of poor cardiovascular prognosis, thereby improving their survival. This is especially important for patients with heart failure, as ST2 concentration can indicate the course of the disease and help optimize treatment intensity or medication doses.
Principle of the study: ST2 concentration is determined by an immunochemical method from a venous blood sample. The results are presented in ng/ml units. The average normal concentration is considered to be about 18 ng/ml, with a significant risk threshold of 35 ng/ml.
Recommendations:
- Recommended for patients suspected of acute or chronic heart failure.
- Useful for monitoring heart diseases and individualizing treatment plans.
- Allocated for assessing the risk of heart fibrosis and inflammation.
- Helps select patients before clinical symptoms appear.
- Test results can be used to decide on treatment intensity or drug dosing.
- No specific preparation is required for the test.
