T4 | Thyroxine

Thyroxine (T4) hormone is the main product secreted by the thyroid glands and is a component of the hypothalamic gland - pituitary, which regulates the thyroid. It increases the basic metabolic rate and plays an important role in the development of all human cells. T4 is secreted as needed, under the influence of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH/TTH). A test of T4 concentrations can be used for the following indications: diagnosing hyperthyroidism, determining primary and secondary hypothyroidism, and monitoring TSH/TTH suppressive therapy. T4 is important in bioenergetics – this hormone increases oxygen consumption and cellular metabolism.
