T4 | Thyroxine

Thyroxine (T4) hormone is the main product secreted by the thyroid glands and is a component of the hypothalamus gland – the pituitary, which regulates the thyroid. It increases the basal metabolic rate and plays an important role in the development of all human cells. T4 is secreted as needed, influenced by the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). T4 concentration testing can be used for the following indications: determining hyperthyroidism, identifying primary and secondary hypothyroidism, and monitoring TSH-suppressing therapy. T4 is important in bioenergetics – this hormone increases oxygen consumption and cellular metabolism.
