Microscopic Examination of Oral Mucosa (Tongue) Scrapings for Candidiasis

What is it? 

This test examines material from oral mucosa or tongue scrapings to identify fungi of the Candida genus. It is most commonly used when there is a suspicion of thrush (candidiasis). 

When is it recommended? 

• Presence of white plaques, irritation, burning sensation in the mouth; 
• In diabetes or when taking antibiotics; 
• For those wearing dentures or with a weakened immune system. 

Benefit: 

A quick method to identify fungal infection and prescribe appropriate treatment (local or systemic). 

How is it performed? 

Material is taken from the tongue or other mucosal areas and examined under a microscope.
