Microscopic examination of oral mucosa (tongue) scrapings for Candidiasis

What is it? 

This is an examination of scrapings from the oral mucosa or tongue to detect Candida fungi. It is most commonly used when there is a suspicion of thrush (candidiasis). 

When is it recommended? 

• Presence of white patches, itching, burning in the mouth; 
• In patients with diabetes or those taking antibiotics; 
• For those wearing dentures or having a weakened immune system. 

Benefits: 

A quick method to diagnose a fungal infection and prescribe appropriate treatment (local or systemic). 

How is it performed? 

Material is taken from the tongue or other mucosal areas and examined under a microscope.
