Description

Nefrins, or metanephrine and normetanephrine, are biochemical substances formed in the body as metabolites of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are hormones secreted by the adrenal gland (above the kidneys), which regulate various body processes, including blood pressure, heart rate, and vasoconstriction.

A blood test for nephrins (metanephrine and normetanephrine) is used to assess the activity of the adrenaline system and to diagnose certain conditions, particularly pheochromocytoma - a benign tumor of the adrenal gland. This test can provide information about the levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the body and help determine if there is excessive production of these hormones.

Typically, a nephrin blood test is performed when pheochromocytoma is suspected. Symptoms of this condition may include sudden and intense high blood pressure, strong heart palpitations, headaches, sweating, and anxiety. The nephrin blood test helps confirm or rule out the presence of pheochromocytoma.

The test results indicate the concentration of metanephrine and normetanephrine in the blood. If the concentration of these substances is high, it may indicate excessive production of adrenaline and noradrenaline, which is typical for pheochromocytoma. In such cases, the patient may be recommended additional tests, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT), to determine the presence and size of the tumor.
