Phosphorus is one of the most important minerals in the body, forming the structure of bones and teeth. It is essential for DNA and RNA formation, participates in energy production, maintains acid-base balance, and is involved in metabolic processes. Phosphorus is also important for the absorption of calcium and vitamin D and for faster healing of bone fractures. For breastfeeding women, phosphorus is necessary for milk production.

The level of phosphorus in the blood is closely related to calcium metabolism. Its concentration increases in cases of calcium deficiency, vitamin D overdose, or kidney failure. A decrease in phosphorus concentration can be observed during menstruation, at the end of the day, and also during the winter period due to seasonal fluctuations.

Principle of the test: Phosphorus levels in the blood are determined by a biochemical method from venous blood. Results are usually presented in mmol/l units. When evaluating the results, it is important to consider the indicators of calcium, vitamin D, and kidney function.

• Useful for evaluating calcium and vitamin D metabolism.
• The test is prescribed if metabolic disorders, bone diseases, or kidney failure are suspected.
• Performed on patients after fractures, especially if healing is prolonged.
• Diet, supplements, physical activity, and time of day can affect test results.
• It is recommended to come for the test fasting for at least 12 hours.
