Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-SO4) is a weak androgenic hormone produced in the adrenal glands, which acts as a precursor to other stronger androgens (e.g., testosterone). DHEA-SO4 is one of the main hormones used to assess adrenal function, especially in cases of hormonal imbalance in women. It is useful for differentiating the origin of androgens - whether they are produced in the ovaries or adrenal glands.
The test is often prescribed for women suffering from hirsutism (excessive hair growth), amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), infertility, or suspected virilizing conditions. An increase in DHEA-SO4 concentration may be associated with adrenal hyperplasia, tumors, or polycystic ovary syndrome. A decreased concentration may indicate adrenal hypofunction.
Test principle: The level of DHEA-SO4 is determined by an immunochemical method from venous blood. Results are presented in µmol/l or µg/dl units. The test is often conducted alongside other sex hormones – testosterone, LH, FSH, prolactin.
Recommendations:
- Recommended for women with hirsutism, amenorrhea, or infertility.
- Useful in cases of suspected adrenal tumors or hyperplasia.
- Prescribed for patients exhibiting signs of virilization (e.g., deep voice, muscle growth, acne).
- Performed alongside other hormonal tests to assess the source of androgens.
- It is recommended to fast for at least 12 hours before the test.
