Quantitative determination of 17-hydroxyprogesterone

What is it? 

17-hydroxyprogesterone – is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and ovaries. Its level is often examined to assess adrenal function, especially when congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is suspected. 

When is it recommended? 

• For newborns when CAH is suspected (common screening test); 
• For women with menstrual irregularities, increased hair growth, infertility; 
• When hormonal imbalance is suspected. 

Benefit to the patient: 

Helps diagnose adrenal dysfunction and choose the appropriate treatment. Early detection of disorders in newborns prevents life-threatening conditions. 

Important to know: 

The interpretation of the test depends on the patient's age, gender, and timing of the test. Sometimes repeated tests or stimulation tests (e.g., ACTH) are needed.
