Prolactin (Prol) - is produced in the anterior pituitary gland and is secreted episodically. In women, prolactin is essential for the development of mammary glands. During pregnancy, prolactin concentration increases due to intensified production of estrogen and progesterone. The stimulating effect of prolactin on the breast gland after childbirth leads to lactation. Hyperprolactinemia (in men and women) is the main cause of fertility disorders.
