Procalcitonin (PCT)

What is it? 

Procalcitonin is an inflammation marker that specifically increases in bacterial infections. Its levels rise quickly and are highly sensitive to systemic inflammations, especially sepsis. 

When is it recommended? 

• Suspected severe bacterial infections or sepsis; 
• Prescribing or discontinuing antibiotics (helps differentiate between viral and bacterial infections); 
• Monitoring treatment effectiveness in intensive care units. 

Benefits: 

Helps avoid unnecessary antibiotic prescription, allows monitoring the course and severity of the inflammatory process. 

Important to know: 

Although PCT is sensitive to bacterial infections, it does not increase in viral diseases, making it an excellent tool for determining the origin of the infection.
