Lipoprotein Electrophoresis

What is it? 

It is a specialized laboratory test that fractionates lipoproteins (cholesterol transport particles) and identifies their types. This allows for a more detailed assessment of lipid metabolism disorders than conventional cholesterol tests. 

When is it recommended? 

• Suspected genetic lipid disorders (familial hypercholesterolemia); 
• If general lipid tests are contradictory or do not explain the clinical condition; 
• Assessing cardiovascular disease risk in complex cases. 

The test allows the identification of specific lipid metabolism pathologies that may be hereditary and lead to early atherosclerosis. 

Important: 

The test is specialized and more commonly applied in certain cases – the decision for its necessity is made by a cardiologist or lipidologist.
