Description

This is an immunological blood test designed to assess the functional activity of monocytes in peripheral blood. The test is conducted using flow cytometry, determining the HLA-DR marker on the surface of monocytes.

HLA-DR is an important marker of immune activation and antigen presentation. Its expression level in monocytes reflects the activity of the innate immune system and the overall immunological status of the body.

What does this test show?

During the test, the following is determined:

  • The proportion of HLA-DR+ monocytes (%) - the percentage of monocytes expressing the HLA-DR marker from all peripheral blood monocytes.

Monocytes are cells of the innate immune system involved in the inflammatory process, pathogen recognition, and antigen presentation to T lymphocytes. Altered HLA-DR expression may indicate a decrease or increase in immune system activity.

When is the test recommended?

The test may be prescribed for:

  • assessing the immune system status in severe infections;
  • suspecting immunosuppression or immunoparalysis;
  • monitoring patients' condition after intensive therapy or severe systemic inflammatory reactions;
  • chronic inflammatory or autoimmune diseases;
  • evaluating the effect of immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive therapy.

How are the results evaluated?

Decreased HLA-DR expression in monocytes may indicate immune system suppression, which in certain clinical situations is associated with an increased risk of secondary infections.

Increased HLA-DR expression may be associated with an active inflammatory or immune response.

Results are evaluated considering the patient's clinical condition, diagnosis, and data from other laboratory tests. The final interpretation is provided by a physician assessing the entire clinical context.
