Aldosterone Measurement at Rest

What is it? 

Aldosterone – an adrenal hormone that regulates salt (sodium and potassium) metabolism and blood pressure. It is important for fluid balance in the body. 

When is it recommended? 

• Suspecting primary or secondary hyperaldosteronism (e.g., with high blood pressure, hypokalemia); 
• With low blood pressure and salt imbalance; 
• Assessing adrenal function or renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system disorders. 

Benefit: 

Helps identify specific causes of hypertension, adjust treatment, and prevent complications. It can be used along with the renin test. 

Important: 

Special preparation may be required before the test (discontinuing certain medications, regulating salt intake). The test is sensitive to body position and time. The patient should rest for at least 30 minutes before the sample is taken (remain still).
