Microscopic Examination of Demodicosis (Demodex Mites): Eyelashes

What is it? 

This is a microscopic examination conducted to search for Demodex mites in eyelash follicles. These mites naturally reside in human skin, but their excess can lead to inflammation, itching, and skin rashes. 

When is it recommended? 

• In cases of eyelid itching, redness, and irritation; 
• If there is noticeable eyelash loss or redness around the eyelids; 
• When suffering from blepharitis or chronic eyelid inflammation. 

Benefits: 

Allows for the identification of mite presence and abundance – treatment is then prescribed accordingly. Helps prevent unnecessary treatment with antibacterial or antifungal medications. 

How is it performed? 

A few eyelashes with roots are taken and examined under a microscope. The procedure is painless and performed quickly.
