Microscopic Examination for Demodex Mites: Facial Skin Scraping

What is it? 

A microscopic examination performed by taking a skin sample (scraping) from the face. It assesses whether the skin is abundant with Demodex mites, which can cause rosacea, acne, and itching. 

When is it recommended? 

• If there is persistent facial redness, widespread rash or skin inflammation; 
• When there is a suspicion of rosacea; 
• When usual acne or dermatitis treatment is ineffective. 

Benefits: 

Helps to determine whether the skin condition is caused by mites or other factors (bacteria, seborrhea, allergy). It allows for accurate treatment selection. 

How is it performed? 

The surface of the skin is gently scraped and the scrapings are examined under a microscope.
