Description

Influenza is an acute respiratory infection that spreads through airborne droplets. Unlike other respiratory infections, influenza causes an acute illness and is dangerous due to the complications it can cause. It is one of the most frequently epidemic diseases. Annually, 5-10% of the population contracts influenza. In Lithuania, an increase in influenza cases is observed during the autumn-winter season.

What is the flu shot?

The flu shot is a vaccine that protects against influenza—a viral respiratory disease that can cause severe complications, especially in people in high-risk groups. Vaccines are typically made from inactivated (killed) parts of the influenza virus, which do not cause the disease but help the body build immunity.

Who is recommended to get the flu shot?

The flu shot is recommended for everyone over 6 months old, especially for these individuals:

  • Older adults (65 years and older);
  • Pregnant women;
  • Young children (especially under 5 years old);
  • People with chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, diabetes;
  • Healthcare workers and others who frequently interact with many people;
  • People with weakened immune systems.

When is it recommended to get vaccinated?

Vaccination is recommended before the flu season, which usually begins in autumn and lasts until spring. Ideally, one should get vaccinated in September-November, so that immunity is built before the peak spread of the flu virus.

How often should you get vaccinated and what is the vaccination schedule?

The flu vaccine is recommended annually because flu viruses are constantly changing (mutating), so the vaccine composition is updated each year to be effective against the currently circulating viruses. The vaccination schedule is simple:

  • Adults and children from 6 years old usually need one dose per year.
  • Young children (from 6 months to 8 years old) getting vaccinated for the first time may need two doses, administered with a 4-week interval.

How else can you protect yourself from the flu?

Besides vaccines, there are several other ways to protect yourself and others from the flu:

  • Regular hand washing with soap and water or using hand sanitizers;
  • Avoiding contact with sick individuals;
  • Immunity-boosting nutrition, rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins C and D, zinc;
  • Maintaining physical activity and getting enough sleep;
  • Avoid large gatherings during the flu season, especially in enclosed spaces.

These protection methods help reduce the risk of flu infection and contribute to improving public health.
