Iron (Fe) is a vital trace element, most of which is found in hemoglobin in the body. Hemoglobin is responsible for the transport of oxygen in the blood. Another significant portion of iron is stored in the body in the form of ferritin as a reserve iron. Iron is also a component of many enzymes and participates in energy metabolism processes. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron.
Iron deficiency manifests as fatigue, weakness, headaches, pale skin, and shortness of breath during physical exertion. Over time, anemia may develop. A few simple blood tests not only determine the amount of iron but also help diagnose anemia and identify its cause.
Iron concentration in the blood increases in liver diseases, vitamin B12 deficiency, or impaired spleen, kidney, or liver function. Iron levels decrease in chronic bleeding, poor nutrition, digestive system disorders, or chronic inflammatory diseases.
Test principle: The amount of iron in the blood is determined by a biochemical method from venous blood. Results are presented in µmol/l or µg/dl units. It is often performed together with ferritin, transferrin, or total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) tests.
Recommendations:
- It is recommended to perform it prophylactically once a year.
- Useful for diagnosing iron deficiency anemia and assessing treatment effectiveness.
- Prescribed for patients experiencing fatigue, weakness, headaches, or shortness of breath.
- Performed in cases of chronic digestive or inflammatory diseases.
- Supplements, medications, and diet can affect test results.
- The test should be taken on an empty stomach for at least 12 hours.
