Functional Movement Testing (FMS)
What is FMS testing?
FMS (Functional Movement Screen) is a scientifically-based functional movement assessment system that helps objectively evaluate the quality of a person's movements, identify potential imbalances, and pinpoint weaknesses that may increase the risk of injury. This testing is highly valued in sports, rehabilitation, and wellness sectors for its reliability and versatility.
How is the testing performed?
The test consists of 7 main movements performed by the individual being tested. Each of them helps evaluate specific body segments and overall movement efficiency:
- Deep Squat – evaluates the synergy of hip, knee, ankle, spine, and shoulder movements.
- Hurdle Step – analyzes hip, ankle, and shoulder coordination and stability.
- In-Line Lunge – assesses ankle, knee, and hip stability and body symmetry.
- Shoulder Mobility – identifies shoulder flexibility and potential posture deficiencies.
- Active Straight Leg Raise – evaluates muscle length, hip mobility, and pelvic stability.
- Trunk Stability Push-Up – tests core strength and control during dynamic movement.
- Rotary Stability – assesses core stability and movement asymmetry.
Scoring System
Each movement is scored on a scale of 0–3:
- 0 points – movement causes pain.
- 1 point – movement cannot be completed even with compensation.
- 2 points – movement is completed, but with compensation or inaccurately.
- 3 points – movement is completed correctly, without compensation.
Who is the FMS test for?
- Athletes – to evaluate movement quality and properly plan training loads.
- Rehabilitation – to identify muscle weaknesses or imbalances post-injury.
- Wellness – to create individualized physical activity programs considering personal capabilities.
- Injury Prevention – to help reduce injury risk by strengthening weak links.
Why choose it?
FMS testing is an evidence-based methodology that helps both athletes and everyday active individuals move safely and efficiently. Accurate functional movement assessment is the first step towards better physical fitness, health, and lifelong movement.
