17-hydroxyprogesterone quantitative determination

What is it? 

17-hydroxyprogesterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and ovaries. Its level is often tested to evaluate adrenal function, especially when congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is suspected. 

When is it recommended? 

• For newborns when CAH is suspected (a common screening test); 
• For women with menstrual disorders, increased hair growth, infertility; 
• When hormonal imbalances are suspected. 

Benefit to the patient: 

Helps diagnose adrenal dysfunction and select appropriate treatment. Early detection of disorders in newborns can prevent life-threatening conditions. 

Important to know: 

The interpretation of the test depends on the patient's age, gender, and the timing of the test. Sometimes repeat tests or stimulation tests (e.g., ACTH) are necessary.
