17-hydroxyprogesterone quantitative determination

What is it? 

17-hydroxyprogesterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and ovaries. Its levels are primarily tested to assess adrenal function, especially when congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is suspected. 

When is it recommended? 

• In newborns when CAH is suspected (a common screening test); 
• In women with menstrual irregularities, increased hair growth, infertility; 
• When hormonal imbalance is suspected.

Helps diagnose adrenal function disorders and select appropriate treatment. Early detection of disorders in newborns can prevent life-threatening conditions. 

Important to know: 

The interpretation of the test depends on the patient's age, gender, and the time of the test. Sometimes repeated tests or stimulation tests (e.g., ACTH) are necessary.
