Collection of pinworm (enterobiasis) sample
To ensure the best quality of sample collection, pinworm samples should be taken between 5-7 AM. Later, pinworms become inactive, reducing the likelihood of finding them.
For children under 14, it is recommended to use the adhesive tape method, and for older individuals – when the anal area becomes hairy, a cotton swab can be used.
For the most accurate diagnosis – the adhesive tape method is the most reliable.
Collection using the ADHESIVE TAPE METHOD. Clear adhesive tape and a microscope slide are required for sample collection.
1. After a night's sleep, do not defecate or wash, collect between 5-7 AM.
2. Press the clear tape with the adhesive side against the anus; you can press a little on the folds with a finger.
3. Remove the tape and press the adhesive side onto the microscope slide.
4. Write the patient's name, surname, and date on the microscope slide.
5. Place the microscope slide in a special box to prevent damage to the sample and deliver it to the laboratory within 24 hours at room temperature (+15…+25) °C.
NOTE It is recommended to repeat the procedure for 3 consecutive mornings to increase the chance of detecting hidden helminthiasis.
Collection using a COTTON SWAB. A cotton swab, boiled water, and a sterile container are required for sample collection.
1. After a night's sleep, do not defecate or wash, collect between 5-7 AM.
2. Moisten the cotton swab in boiled water and gently clean each fold of the anus.
3. Place the swab in a sterile container and seal it. Write the patient's surname, name, and date of birth on the container.
4. The sterile container with the sample must be delivered to the laboratory on the same day, preferably as soon as possible at (+15…+25) °C temperature.
NOTE It is recommended to repeat the procedure for 3 consecutive mornings to increase the chance of detecting hidden helminthiasis.
