Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) from Serum Creatinine

What is it? 

It is a mathematically calculated indicator that shows how effectively the kidneys filter. The GFR value is obtained based on the amount of creatinine in the blood, the patient's age, gender, and sometimes body weight. 

How is it performed? 

Based on the amount of creatinine obtained from a blood test. The calculation is performed automatically in the laboratory information system. 

When is it recommended? 

• Evaluating kidney function (prophylactically or in the presence of disease symptoms); 
• In chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension); 
• Monitoring the progression of kidney diseases or the effect of treatment.
