Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) from Serum Creatinine

What is it? 

This is a mathematically calculated indicator that shows how effectively the kidneys filter. The GFR value is obtained based on the amount of creatinine in the blood, the patient's age, gender, and sometimes body weight. 

How is it performed? 

Based on the amount of creatinine obtained from a blood test. The calculation is performed automatically in the laboratory information system. 

When is it recommended? 

• When assessing kidney function (prophylactically or in the presence of disease symptoms); 
• For chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension); 
• To monitor the progression of kidney diseases or the effect of treatment.
