The first grade is an important stage for both the child and the parents. One of the biggest challenges in preparing for school is choosing the right backpack. The most important thing is that the backpack is not only beautiful but also comfortable and safe for the child's health. Physiotherapist Agnė Ruzgė shares tips on what to pay attention to when choosing a backpack and what mistakes to avoid.
The Five Most Important Backpack Criteria
According to the physiotherapist, the most important criteria when choosing a backpack are size, weight, material, ergonomics, and safety elements. The backpack should match the child's height and build – one that is too large or too heavy can harm the spine.
“It is important that the backpack is ergonomic, meaning it should have a padded back for comfort and adjustable straps. When the straps are adjusted, the backpack should not be lower than the waist and not higher than the shoulder line. It's also important that the backpack is made from quality material and is breathable so that the back can "breathe." No less important is to consider safety; the backpack should have reflectors. And it would be great if the backpack had a place for a drinking bottle, as it's important for a growing child's body to drink plenty of water,” shares physiotherapist Agnė Ruzgė.
Most quality backpacks feature not only ergonomics and conveniently arranged compartments but also have additional advantages: a padded back, adjustable straps, reflective elements, and a place for a drinking bottle. Some models have a reinforced and moisture-protected base.
How Much Can a First-Grader's Backpack Weigh?
The maximum weight of the backpack should be 10-15% of the child's body weight. A backpack that is too heavy can eventually harm the child's health.
“It would be ideal if the backpack had compartments to distribute weight evenly. If the weights and loads are distributed unevenly, we risk having muscle imbalances in the future, which often lead to back pain or other musculoskeletal disorders. Don't forget – how the backpack is carried is also very important. The biggest mistake is to carry the backpack on one shoulder. It should be worn on both shoulders so that the load is distributed evenly. Also, it should not be carried by hand. The place for the backpack is on the back and both shoulders,” warns the physiotherapist.
