Physiotherapist's advice: how to choose the right backpack for a first-grader
The first grade is an important stage for both the child and the parents. One of the biggest challenges in preparing for school is choosing the right backpack. The most important thing is that the backpack is not only beautiful but also comfortable and safe for the child's health. Physiotherapist Agnė Ruzgė shares tips on what to pay attention to when choosing a backpack and what mistakes to avoid.
The five most important criteria for a backpack
According to the physiotherapist, the most important criteria when choosing a backpack are: size, weight, material, ergonomics, and safety elements. The backpack should match the child's height and build - too large or too heavy can harm the spine.
“It's important that the backpack is ergonomic, meaning it should have a padded back for the child's comfort, as well as adjustable straps. Once the straps are adjusted, the backpack should not be below the waist and not above the shoulders. Also, it's important that the backpack is made of quality material and is breathable so the back can 'breathe'. It's equally important to consider safety, the backpack should have reflectors. And it would be great if the backpack had a place for a water bottle, as it's important for children's growing bodies to drink plenty of water,” shares physiotherapist Agnė Ruzgė.
Most quality backpacks not only feature ergonomics or conveniently arranged compartments but also have additional benefits: a padded back, adjustable straps, reflective elements, and a place for a water bottle. Some models have a reinforced and moisture-protected bottom.
How much can a first-grader's backpack weigh?
The maximum weight of the backpack should be 10-15% of the child's body weight. A backpack that is too heavy can eventually harm the child's health.
“It would be ideal if the backpack had compartments so that the weights are distributed evenly. If weights and loads are distributed unevenly, we risk having muscle imbalances in the future, which often lead to back pain or other musculoskeletal disorders. Don't forget - it's very important how the backpack is worn. The biggest mistake is to carry the backpack on one shoulder. It should be worn on both shoulders so that the load is distributed evenly. Also, it should not be carried by hand. The backpack's place is on the back and both shoulders,” warns the physiotherapist.
