Bacteriological Culture: Why is this Test Needed?

Many acute and chronic diseases and ailments are caused by various bacteria. Sometimes antibiotic treatment does not yield the desired result because the disease-causing agents are resistant to certain types of medications. To not only overcome illnesses but also ensure that the patient doesn't relapse, a bacteriological culture must be performed. Doctor otorhinolaryngologist Jurgita Domarkienė discusses the benefits and importance of this test in treating various illnesses.

The medic working at Rezus.lt clinic says that a bacteriological culture helps to identify and treat ear, nose, and throat diseases. The test is uncomplicated, and it doesn't cause pain or discomfort to the patient. The bacteriological culture is taken from the nose, nasopharynx, throat, and ears. The answer is usually obtained after just a few days.

„This test is important not only during acute illnesses but also chronic ones. Even when deciding to operate on tonsillitis, a bacteriological culture is taken from the palatine tonsils. By cultivating streptococcus, it can be decided whether to remove the palatine tonsils during a tonsillectomy operation,“ says J. Domarkienė.

The culture is also useful for diagnosing complications of viral diseases. Very often, a prolonged viral disease can lead to bacterial proliferation in the body.

„A bacteriological culture from the nose and nasopharynx is very important when golden staphylococcus is detected. Often people are not even aware they have it. Thus, the test helps diagnose and take certain measures. Also, the bacteriological culture is important for the treatment of external otitis, where often not only bacteria but also fungi are the cause,“ says the doctor.

When the disease-causing agent is identified during a bacteriological culture, an antibiogram can be performed. Antibiotics to which the identified bacteria are sensitive are selected. Therefore, the treatment becomes quick and highly effective.

The bacteriological culture is performed at the Rezus.lt clinic in Šiauliai, at Gumbinės street 33C.
