HPV: Early diagnosis can save lives.
In Lithuania, about 300 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed annually, and the main cause of this disease is the human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus is most commonly found among sexually active women aged 20–25, but it can be detected in people of various ages. Early diagnosis is especially important because timely detection of the infection allows for measures to be taken to prevent cancerous changes.
We spoke to “Rezus.lt” medical biologist J. Sližytė about the importance of HPV, diagnostic innovations, and our newly offered service, who shared her expert opinion.
Why is it important to get tested for HPV?
“HPV infection is often asymptomatic, so a person may not even know they are infected.” states J. Sližytė. She adds that in most cases, the immune system is able to eliminate the virus within 1–2 years, but in some cases, the virus remains in a latent state and can cause changes that can lead to cancerous diseases. “Early detection allows monitoring of cellular changes and the application of preventive measures.” the specialist notes.
New possibilities for home testing
In recent years, more opportunities have emerged to perform HPV tests conveniently and effectively. One of them is the newly introduced self-testing kits, which are now also offered by Rezus.lt. They allow women to take a sample for testing comfortably and privately at home, without visiting a medical facility.
“Self-sampling is a convenient and reliable method. It removes psychological and logistical barriers, so more people are encouraged to get tested.” states J. Sližytė. She emphasizes that modern self-testing methods, if performed according to instructions, are just as accurate as professionally taken samples.
These innovative solutions can help reach more people living in remote areas or with limited access to doctors, thus contributing to improving public health.
