What is it?
Tryptase – is an enzyme produced by mast cells, which are involved in allergic reactions. The concentration of tryptase increases during systemic allergic reactions – anaphylaxis.
When is it recommended?
- Suspected anaphylaxis after drugs, food, insect bites;
- Diagnosis and monitoring of mastocytosis;
- Allergy assessment when unknown causes trigger a sudden body reaction.
Benefits:
Helps confirm a severe allergic reaction even when symptoms have already disappeared. Useful for assessing the risk of recurrence and identifying the exact cause.
Important to know:
Blood for the test should be taken within 1–4 hours from the onset of the reaction – this is when the tryptase level is highest. Sometimes repeated tests are ordered to determine the baseline level.
