What is it?
This is a laboratory blood test to detect galactomannan, a specific polysaccharide found in the cells of the Aspergillus fungus species. Aspergillus is a mold fungus that can cause severe infections (aspergillosis), especially in people with weakened immune systems.
How is it performed?
The test is performed using venous blood by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. An additional test from bronchoalveolar fluid is possible if lung damage is being investigated.
When is it recommended?
- In suspected or confirmed fungal infections;
- In patients after chemotherapy, transplantation, or long-term antibiotic treatment;
- In severe respiratory diseases that do not improve with conventional treatment.
Benefits:
Early diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis helps to initiate timely antifungal treatment and reduce the risk of complications and mortality. The test is very important for immunocompromised patients.
