Description
Prevenar 20 (apexxnar) is a pneumococcal vaccine indicated for:
- children older than 6 weeks but younger than 18 years to help protect against certain diseases such as meningitis (inflammation of the brain membranes), sepsis or bacteremia (bacteria in the blood), pneumonia (lung infections), and ear infections (acute otitis media) caused by 20 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria;
- individuals 18 years and older to help protect against certain diseases such as pneumonia (lung infections), sepsis or bacteremia (bacteria in the blood), and meningitis (inflammation of the brain membranes) caused by 20 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria.
Prevenar 20 protects against 20 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. This vaccine stimulates the body to produce its own antibodies, which protect you or your child from these diseases.
Prevenar 20 will only protect against ear infections caused by the types of Streptococcus pneumoniae for which it was developed. It will not protect against other pathogens that may cause ear infections.
How Prevenar 20 is administered:
- From 6 weeks to 12 months, 3 doses should be given at different intervals.
- From 12 months to 24 months, 2 vaccines should be given.
- From 2 years to 18 years, one injection should be given.
- Adults should receive 1 injection.
