Identification of Swine Flu H1N1 Virus
This is a new subtype of influenza virus that causes illness in humans. It contains gene segments from swine, avian and human influenza viruses. Symptoms of pandemic influenza A(H1N1) are similar to those of regular seasonal flu: fever, symptoms of a respiratory infection such as cough or runny nose, sore throat, and possible other symptoms: muscle aches and headaches, chills, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhea (these symptoms are not common with seasonal flu, but occur in some people with pandemic flu). Influenza is spread in the same way as seasonal flu. It is transmitted from person to person: through airborne droplets when a sick person coughs or sneezes, indirectly through environmental objects or through dirty hands, when touching objects contaminated with respiratory secretions of a sick person, touching the mouth or nose with hands.
